How Can Cannabis Help Sleep?

One of the most common questions from customers is what can help me sleep. Up to 30% of Americans experienced trouble falling asleep at some point in their lives. Cannabis has been shown to increase melatonin production in the brain and inhibit waking parts of the brain. Many cannabis users say that it improves their sleep, however, there are some caveats.

THC has an interesting effect on sleep cycles through the night, causing decreased time in REM sleep and increased time in deep sleep. This means that users spend less time dreaming and more time getting well rested sleep. The Sleep Foundation suggests that this could be helpful for someone who wants to avoid nightmares.

THC can be stimulating or sedating depending on many factors. When using cannabis for sleep smaller doses can be more effective. CBD, on the other hand, requires a higher dose to be effective for sleep. Some studies have had success at 25 mg of CBD while others report needing 300 mg of ingested CBD to be effective for sleep.

Even though cannabis is plenty helpful as a short term remedy, long term use of cannabis for sleep can worsen sleep habits. This is the same for other sleep medications such as melatonin

What is CBN?

CBN is a cannabinoid in the plant that has recently gained marketing traction to help with sleep. There is little scientific research on CBN despite its promising mechanism. CBN has been shown to help reduce stress and pain so it might help aid sleep in that manner. In short, CBN is believed by many to help sleep, but there is no current scientific research to back these claims.
