Topicals & Salves: Let’s Get Topical

What is Topical Cannabis?

Topical cannabis refers to balms, lotions, oils, and sprays that are applied to the skin for a localized effect. These products will not make you feel high since they do not make it into your bloodstream.

Transdermal patches, on the other hand, do cross into your bloodstream for a full body effect.

Balms have a thick hard consistency that consists of plant oils or wax material. The plant oils allow balms to get into your pores more efficiently. Salves are similar to balms but have less wax for a slightly lighter consistency. Lotions are much creamier and less oily than balms and salves.

Transdermal patches have an adhesive side that sticks to your skin. Be sure to place it somewhere like your arm, wrist, or ankle where there is plenty of bloodflow. The patch is activated by body heat and the cannabinoids are transferred through the skin and into the bloodstream. It is slowly released, unlike smoking or edibles, so it is unlikely to give you a “high” but is still great for full body relief.

What is it Good For?

Topicals are great for a number of skin conditions including psoriasis, eczema, sunburns, dry skin, acne, and much more. Some anecdotal evidence has shown that it can slow down or eliminate melanoma. It is also great for treating pain related to aches, nerve pains, arthritis, ulcers, and itches.

One reason why people love topical cannabis is because it is extremely fast acting. It is also a great option for those looking for minimal side effects.
